Peter, a 5-year-old boy, liked seashells(贝壳) very much. He often collected seashells with his sister, Shirley. For him, seashells lay shining on the beautiful beach, just like stars in the sky.
One day, Peter walked in the market with Shirley, with some shells in his pocket. When Peter found Shirley was standing in front of a toy shop and looking at something inside the window, he went to her and asked, "What do you want?" Shirley pointed at the doll inside the window. Walking into the shop, Peter gave the doll to Shirley. The sister was really happy.
Peter came to the shopkeeper, "How much is this doll, sir?" The shopkeeper asked the boy kindly, "Well, what can you pay?" Peter reached into his clothes for money that was for their breakfast. "Sir, is it enough?" The shopkeeper answered, "I'm afraid it's not enough."
Peter thought for a while and then took out all the shells. The shopkeeper took the seashells and started counting them as if they are coins(硬币). "These are more than the cost." Saying so, the shopkeeper kept only four shells and gave back the others and the money.
After they left, an assistant(助手) in the shop asked the shopkeeper, "Sir, why do you do that? That doll certainly costs more than four seashells." The shopkeeper said, "For us, these are shells, but for the boy, they are treasures. When he grows up, he'll remember that he once bought a doll for his sister with seashells. He must be
grateful for what I do today and know that there are wonderful and kind people in the world. And perhaps he will also treat others in this way."
