Ⅱ. 多样住房 在不同的地理、文化影响下,不同地区的人们住着不同的房子。不同住房适宜不同的人群,影响着人们的生活方式,甚至带来挑战。
When you hear the word “home”,you probably think of the place you are living in right now. Maybe it is an apartment,a single house,or a two - storey house. Maybe it is made of wood or stone. You may think houses are just simple buildings, but some houses around the world are very special!
A cave(洞穴) can be seen as the first type of house. While very few people live in caves today, our ancestors(祖先) made caves within mountains. Some people in the southern part of Spain live in caves today. They call these cave homes “cuebas”. These caves keep the house cool during the summer and warm during the winter.
All over Britain there are over 30,000 houseboats—boats that people use as homes on these canals(运河) and rivers. Living on the water sounds romantic(浪漫的),but it is also hard work. There are daily things that need to be done, like bringing fuel(燃料) and water on board and dealing with “waste” water from the kitchen sink, shower and toilet. In winter, living on a boat can be very cold and there is always a feeling of being wet. Of course, most boats are quite small.
In many parts of China, people have lived in large groups, inside the high mud(泥) walls of a tulou. Tulou means “earth building”. Inside there can be 250 rooms around a big courtyard(庭院). The buildings are made of wood. In the courtyard people can cook, wash and dry clothes and children can play. Families also get together there for celebrations. At first, the tulou was built as a safe place to protect people inside.
Another type of home is the “igloo” used by the Inuit people of Canada and Greenland. Igloos are usually made of ice and snow. The igloo protects the people from the wind as well as keeps them warm. In fact, the temperature inside an igloo can even reach 16℃ just from body heat alone.
