Frances was blowing bubbles in her milk. There was only a little milk left,so the bubbles weren't going over the sides of the glass. But it drove Aunt Augusta mad.
"Don't act like a baby," said Aunt Augusta impatiently. Her words made Frances feel small. Frances bit her lower lip, watching the last bubble pop in her glass.
Something kept popping into Frances' mind—what had happened the morning before. Frances had been dancing in a circle with her two younger sisters Grace and Ella. Just then, her friend Julie came along. "You'd better act your age," said Julie.
Frances' face turned pink at once. She looked down on the ground, avoiding looking at Grace. Julie's words burned in her ears, making her feel like she'd done something wrong just for having fun. And finally without saying another word,Frances went with Julie to join their friends, quietly stepping to the back of the group.
The next day was Saturday and it was time to visit grandparents. Frances took a long and deep breath before she finally managed to enter her grandparents' house since Aunt Augusta would be there as well. The front door suddenly opened as Frances stepped inside, her heart pounding like a drumroll before the school play.
Grandma was singing rhymes with Grace. Grandpa was dancing with Ella. At the dinner,Frances felt a little better after having some of her favourite food. Then Aunt Augusta started talking about her fights with her next-door neighbour. "...and this morning I found his dog burying(埋)a bone right in the middle of my flower bed!!" she said. "I dug up the bone, wrapped it with shiny paper, and put it in that man's mailbox."
"Oh,Augusta," said Grandma,"you should learn to act your age." Aunt Augusta managed a smile and said,"I guess I should." Frances started to laugh as if a weight had lifted off her.
On Sunday,Frances was playing hopscotch(跳房子)with Grace when Julie walked by. "You still play a baby game like this?" asked Julie.
"Yes,I do," said Frances, her eyes shining with quiet confidence.
As she balanced on one foot, hopscotch chalk dust stuck on her sneakers. After watching for a while,Julie said," ▲ "
