Just after he bought the paper, his phone rang. It was a message from Richard, his friend at the newspaper. "Congratulations on the story!" Richard wrote.
Bob smiled. He joined the newspaper last year. That was when he met Richard, a senior reporter. For months, Richard was very hard on Bob. He often marked up Bob's stories with lots of corrections. Over time, however, Richard began to share stories of his days as a young reporter. Bob found these stories encouraging and started to look up to Richard even more. Richard didn't just focus on Bob's mistakes. He taught Bob how to find good stories and write them well. He showed Bob how to talk to people, ask the right questions and make them comfortable enough to share their stories. With Richard's help, Bob grew to be a very good reporter.
As he held the newspaper in his hands, he felt proud of himself. But more than that, he was thankful to have a teacher and friend like Richard.
