Mr Wang is putting on a shadow play for a lot of people in his home village. He learnt the craft from his father and grandfather. In tonight's show he will sing and play all the different characters in the story and three other musicians will provide (提供) the music for the shadow play.
Chinese shadow puppetry has been around for over 2,000 years. It is one of the earliest forms of moving picture storytelling. It is an important part of Chinese culture. It tells about the lives of historical figures (历史人物), folk stories and important life lessons and it shows the value of different communities.
However, shadow puppetry is not as popular as before as more people like to watch online videos. Mr Wang says that many shadow puppetry performers (表演者) try to change their shadow plays. “Our plays aren't as long as before, and we sometimes add modern things, like famous pop songs, to surprise people. It seems to be working as everyone really enjoyed tonight's show!”
