Fairfield School is called “the greenest school in Britain” because the students and teachers there think it's worth looking after the environment! This is what they are doing.
Growing vegetables. Students in Fairfield School started their own vegetable garden. Both children and teachers plant and water the seeds, and then they pick the vegetables, which are used in school meals. 1 “School lunches are tastier than ever before,” says one pupil.
Recycling. Students don't just bring their books to school. 2 There are recycling bins in the playground for cans, plastic bottles, batteries and paper. The teachers give a prize every month to the pupil who has tried the hardest to recycle.
3 “This used to be one of the least beautiful areas of the city with no green areas,” says the head teacher Lynne Johnson. “Now every child has planted their own tree, which he or she looks after during the week. They've made the view from the classroom more beautiful!”
Riding bikes. Everyone walks or cycles to Fairfield School! “When the roads are busy, it's faster to ride bikes than to go by car anyway,” says one pupil. 4 “We can't encourage our students to look after the environment if we don't do it ourselves!” says one teacher.
“We are doing a lot, but there are still many more things we can do,” says the head teacher. “5”

Has your teacher ever visited your home? Home visits used to be a key way for teachers and families to communicate. 1
A recent survey in Zhejiang Province found that 85.5 per cent of 6,200 parents don't like teachers visiting their homes, reported CCTV.
2 Some parents have a strong sense of privacy (隐私), while others find the preparation work tiring. For busy teachers, visiting all their students' homes can take up too much of their time and energy.
To solve the problem, schools and teachers in China are trying new ways to communicate. For example, Wang Hongjun, a principal in Shenzhen, holds parent-teacher meetings twice each term instead of once. 3 Then they have one-on-one meetings with each parent. This makes communication clearer and more efficient (高效的).
Wang's school also offers group activities and book clubs to support parents' development. This programme shows the importance of a peaceful home environment for children. 4
Other schools are also trying new ideas. 5 Shanghai Municipal Kindergarten asks parents first if they like the idea. If they do, home visits take place; if not, communication happens online. This way results in “full communication and understanding between home and school”, a parent told The Paper.
