It’s Friday evening. I took all the family members’ tablets away. Our smartphones were turned off. We lit the candles (蜡烛) and sat down to have dinner. We call it our “Technology Shabbat (科技安
息
日
)” and it lasts from sunset (日落) on Friday to sunset on Saturday.
I first learned about the importance of “Technology Shabbat” in 2008, when my father was badly ill. Some days he would wake up for only one hour, and the only thing I wanted to do was to be with him. When I looked after my father, I turned off my smartphone.
In our “Technology Shabbat”, time slows down. Our Saturdays now feel like a short holiday. We drive cars or ride bikes. We work in the garden with our kids. We all feel great.
We should learn to keep a balance(平衡) between the good and the bad of technology. The technology helps us share knowledge (知识) and fun ideas all over the world. But the technology also takes something away from us. When we go on the internet at night to look through something, we can never stop.
Now we’re rushing into the time full of high technology. We should pay attention(关注) to what we are doing online and when we should go offline.
I will always remember the most amazing thing in my family: Technology Shabbat.
