Every year, lots of animals around the world go on migration (迁徙) journeys. Some need to find food; others are looking for somewhere to produce and raise their young. Migrations can be long and difficult for animals, but new research on birds found that farmlands along the way can help them.
In spring, hundreds of thousands of birds living near Lake Poyang, in China, fly north to Siberia. On the way, they find places to stop and eat. Some birds eat young grass. But this food can last for only a few weeks. And climate (气候) change can sometimes make the grass grow earlier than usual. This means that some birds arrive too late to eat the grass. Also, as more land is used for farming, there are fewer natural wetlands where birds like to look for food.
A team of researchers followed 246 birds flying from Lake Poyang to Siberia. They found that the birds changed their diets to adapt to (适应) the environment they passed through. As well as eating grass from the wetlands along the way, the birds also ate seeds (种子) farmers left.
The researchers believe that seeds are now a more important part of migrating birds' diets since there are fewer natural wetlands. They suggest that if farmers use different ways of harvesting (收割庄稼), such as using machines, that will leave behind more seeds in fields, which could help to feed migrating birds. Still, wetlands must be protected, so the birds can enjoy different food during their long journeys.
