Duan Jiayang, a student of a primary school in Yinchuan, Ningxia, learned the skills in taking care of vegetable fields recently. "I learned how to place the mulch film (地膜)," he said. "It's not easy."
In China, some parents pay much attention to their children's grades, but don't care much about their life skills.
"Some parents do everything for their children," said Yan Mei, an official in the primary school, adding that many students are short of the basic skills to live. For example, some parents even do the classroom's cleaning for their children.
Since March in 2020, the government has required that colleges, middle schools and primary schools should teach students practical skills. So the primary school started an agricultural (农业的) course. Students plant fruit and vegetables during class.
In the days coming up to the May Day holiday, students of different grades at the school worked together in the fields, said school principal Yang Bo. They planted watermelons, carrots and corn. May Day, also known as Labour Day, is celebrated on May 1 in China. The school hopes that students can understand how precious (宝贵的) the food is through this activity.
