The moment that Jiang Mengnan received the Touching China Award, she said she wanted to thank her parents most.
Born in 1992 in Hunan Province, Jiang's world has been silent since she was 6 months old when a fever damaged her hearing. After that, Jiang's parents began to teach her to lip-read (唇读). Jiang put her hands on the throats (喉咙) of her parents when they talked and felt the vibration (震动) to learn to speak. She also carefully looked at other people's lips to know how to pronounce. Mastering a single word can take at least 1,000 tries for Jiang.
Through lip-reading and self-study, Jiang was able to keep up with learning and was admitted to Jilin University to study Pharmacy (药学) with a high score. In 2018, she started her PhD study at Tsinghua University.
