Jordan Benissan starts his show by drumming. He hits the drums with his hands. Sometimes in the centre,sometimes on the side,sometimes with a quick brush of the drum’s surface(表面).
When Benissan was a child,he didn’t have enough money to buy a musical instrument,so he called on his creativity. He collected an empty coffee can,a string(弦),and a bow-shaped(弓形的)stick. He tried to make an instrument by hand. He cut a hole in the bottom of the coffee can for the string to go through. Then he tied each end of the string to the bow. When he played it,he sat on the floor and strummed(弹拨)the string. The sound was beautiful.
Benissan uses drums of many shapes and sizes when he plays. Those different drums,he says,make up a family. His drum family has a father,a mother,an elder brother,a daughter,twins,and a baby brother. These instruments,Benissan says,give music its heartbeat.
When the drum family works together,it makes a composition(乐曲)more beautiful than any of the instrument can make alone. Benissan believes that the same idea works for people.
“As a member of a community in Africa,everybody is very important,” Benissan says. “Whether you are small or big,you can do something for the whole group.”
Music plays an important role in Togo,which is a country of more than five million people. A master musician in Togo is a performer,a teacher,a historian,a doctor,and a voice for the community. The people of Togo use music to understand and connect to the past. People there make music a part of everyday life. When there is a community project to finish,such as building a school,people throughout the community join in the work. They come not just with tools but with instruments. So the music comes together with the work and brings happiness to the task.
