On Oct. 8,2020,Louise Gluck became the 16th woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. She has been no stranger to awards over her long and storied career since her first publication Firstborn in 1968. In 1993,she won the Pulitzer Prize for her collection of poems,The Wild Iris. Her work Faithful Virtuous Night received a National Book Award for Poetry(诗)in 2014.
“She is awarded the prize for her simple and clear writing style of poems. To her,the most beautiful poems come from her life. She cares a lot about common people in her creating,” Nobel Committee Chairperson Anders Olsson said.
Louise Gluck, the writer of 12 poetry collections, was born in New York City in 1943 and she began writing poetry at an early age. After graduation, she started teaching poetry at universities. She is considered to be one of America's most talented poets(诗人). She is also called “one of the purest poets now writing”.
The themes of her works cover loss(失去)and death. Because of this, readers have often found her works to be “dark”. However, there is much more than darkness in her voice,as noted by Olsson. “It is straightforward(直接的)and ... also a voice full of humour,” he said. For example,in her poem Snowdrops, she uses the coming of spring after winter to show rebirth of life after death. She leads readers down a dark path only to reconnect with the light at the near end. At the conclusion of the poem, readers are left to feel the “raw wind of the new world” as they watch a new spring. This is often the case in Gluck's poems, being able to feel joy in the end.
Although she's already a well-known writer,Gluck did feel honored(荣幸的)to be given the Nobel award. When asked what the prize means to her,the poet said,“It's too new... I don't really know what it means.” Her only hope is that she can remain her daily life.
