The UK honoured Jane Austen (1775-1817) by making her the face of the new £10 note. After more than 200 years since her death, the writer's fame(名气)has increased many times.
Austen's work is popular all over the world today, although her novels are set in a much older time. The most famous is Pride and Prejudice(《傲慢与偏见》),which is set in the late 18th century — a time when women depended on their husbands for almost everything.
The story follows Elizabeth Bennet. She is one of five daughters in a family with little money. The main story is the love-hate relationship between Elizabeth and Mr Darcy,a rich nobleman(贵族). At first, they argue(争论). Elizabeth feels that Mr Darcy looks down on the poor, while Darcy thinks Elizabeth has wrongly judged(评价)him. The attraction of the story comes from how characters overcome(克服)their pride and prejudice to reach the surprising ending.
Upon reading the book,it's clear why the novel is still popular today, though it was set 300 years ago. Although there have been many changes since then, everybody today can connect it to the difficulty in finding the partner of their dreams.
Many of Austen's books focus on(专注于)serious events for young women and continue to encourage many women today.
However, she was still able to add comedic(喜剧的)characters to her novels. These include the pushy and annoying Mrs Bennet(Elizabeth's mother in Pride and Prejudice)and the rich and snobby(势力的)Sir Walter Elliot from the novel Persuasion.
With this wonderful mix,it's no surprise she was chosen to be the face of the £10 note.
