Melinda sat glued to her favourite mystery book. She dreamed of being a detective and couldn't wait to solve a mystery! But she didn't have one then.
As she finished the last page, she heard something from the kitchen. “Hey! Who ate all the chocolate?!” Mom shouted.
Melinda ran into the kitchen. She found the chocolate box empty. “It's a mystery!” she cried. “I must find out who ate all the chocolate.” Mom looked at Melinda. “I don't think so.”
“Sure, it is! And I'm on the case!” Melinda got right to work looking for clues but couldn't find any. Then she wrote a suspect list with the names of everyone in the house.
Mom was the first suspect. “Mom, you were at the scene of the crime,” said Melinda. “It wasn't me!” laughed Mom. “Exactly what a guilty person would say,” Melinda replied.
“I wish I ate it,” said Mom, “but it was gone when I got home.” Oh right, thought Melinda, Mom was at work so it wasn't her.
Next was Milo. “Where were you between 7:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.?” asked Melinda. “What are you talking about?” Milo asked, confused. “The chocolate, Milo! It didn't eat itself,” Melinda shouted.
“▲,” Milo replied. Typical Milo, thought Melinda, always blaming(责备)someone else.
The mystery wasn't solved yet. “Dad is the main suspect!” she thought. Melinda ran to the living room to find Dad. “You didn't eat much at dinner tonight,” said Melinda. “You must have been pretty hungry afterward. Maybe you were wanting some chocolate!” Melinda yelled.
“I had strawberry ice cream, remember?” She ran to the kitchen and looked in the fridge — half a box of strawberry ice cream.
Dad's story checked out. “OK, you're clear,” she said, not happy.
“Oh, there might be someone you missed,” Dad laughed. “How could that be?” she thought. She had questioned everyone! The case was still not solved, and it was time for bed.
In the bathroom, Melinda froze when she saw her face in the mirror(镜子).
A quick lick(舔)showed the truth: CHOCOLATE! Melinda ran back downstairs. “I did it!” she shouted.
“You sure did!” Mom laughed. “That's right,” said Melinda. “Mystery solved!”
