Ten years after The Grandmaster (《一代宗师》), Wong Kar-wai is finally returning. This time, the Hong Kong film director tried a “small screen” production. His first television series, Blossoms Shanghai (《繁花》), began airing on December 27, 2023.
The 30-episode drama is based on a 2012 novel of the same name. It was written by Jin Yucheng. The story is set in Shanghai in the 1990s. It centres around A Bao (played by Hu Ge), a Shanghainese man. Over ten years, he rises from humble (低微的) beginnings to become a successful entrepreneur (企业家).
Jin wrote Blossoms Shanghai in the hope that it would help readers understand the city and its culture. “The novel has been the perfect one to share my love for my hometown,” said Wong. “With the series, I would like to invite the audience to see Shanghai in the early 1990s. It was an exciting time that paved the way for (为……铺平道路) the prosperity (繁荣) of modern Shanghai.”
The TV series stays true to the novel’s local colour. The leads were all born and raised in Shanghai. A lot of the dialogue is in Shanghainese. Much effort was also made to recreate the look and feel of Shanghai in the 1990s. The television crew even posted a newspaper notice looking for everyday objects from that time.
The show had been six years in the making. The filming took three years to complete. The director is well-known for being very particular (挑剔的) about each and every shot (镜头). He often requires actors to perform a scene more than ten times.
The director made some challenging choices with this work too. He has released Blossoms Shanghai in two versions (版本): Mandarin (普通话) and Shanghainese.
The Shanghainese version is very popular among viewers. “I prefer the Shanghainese version, although I don’t understand the dialect,” a girl said. “I really like the local features.”
