Who is “momo”? You may not have seen one in person, but you're more than likely to meet one online. On Xiaohongshu, Douban or other social media (媒体), more and more people with the name “momo” and the pictures of a dinosaur appear. As the *Paper* reported, the Internet makes it hard for many people to see the boundaries between online and offline lives. Worrying about personal information being given away and being cyber-bullied (网暴) by others, or being afraid of showing how they really feel on the Internet, people are more willing to go online *anonymously*. “Hiding under the name of ‘momo’, I've never worried that I will be found by people in my real life,” Coco Ding said. Being a “momo” is like wearing a mask sometimes.
As more and more “momos” have appeared on the Internet, a new online group has been set up. For example, on Douban there is a “momo” group with more than 8 000 members. In this group, “momos” have a close relationship and like to share their stories and life experiences. Interestingly, though “momos” want to hide themselves online, they still want to show their personalities and who they are in their group. “As ‘momo’ users, we can decide whether we want to share something or not,” said Ding. This is the best thing about the little “dinosaur”.
