Hello listeners and welcome to Earth’s Extremes, a podcast all about the most amazing and extreme places on earth. In today’s episode, we’re focusing on deserts. Did you know that deserts cover about one third of the planet’s land? Since deserts make up a huge part of the earth, it’s important for us to understand them well.
Some people think deserts are lifeless places, but that couldn’t be further from the truth! Some deserts are actually full of life. Many different types of amazing plants and animals find ways to survive in these challenging places. Scientists can learn so much about survival from desert wildlife.
Deserts are also important for global temperatures. You may be surprised to hear that, but deserts store a lot of carbon. This means that deserts can help slow down climate change and keep the planet’s temperature balanced.
Any other important things about deserts? Yes! We often find ancient bones in them. And not just bones! Deserts also have objects from ancient societies. In this way, deserts help us learn about the past. Just as importantly, deserts could play a big role in the future. Since deserts get so much sunlight, they could be a great place to get solar energy. Deserts could power our future!
