文化意识跨文化交流 The Water-Splashing Festival is regarded as an important part of the New Year celebrations of the Dai ethnic group(傣族). People splash(泼洒) water on one another
during
the festival to wash away all the bad luck and begin a new year of
happiness
(happy) and good fortune.
The festival attracts tens of
thousands
(thousand) of people to take part in the event every year. Local Dai people dress in
traditional
(tradition) costumes. They dance and sing while splashing water on each other as a way to express good wishes. The more water people splash on you,
the
luckier and happier your life will be.
On April 15, 2024, Melissa Baidak, from Russia, was scared at first when people came to her and splashed water, but then she
joined
(join) in and had a good time.
“The joy reminds
me
(I) of my childhood,” she said. Melissa who is a student at Beijing Foreign Studies University tried on an ethnic Dai dress and tasted many cuisines(美食) during her stay in Xishuangbanna. “
Flying
(fly) the Kongming lanterns at night and splashing water on other people were the most impressive activities for me,” she said.
Another visitor from the United States said he was
amazed
(amaze) by the celebration. He said two elderly women wearing ethnic Dai clothes splashed water on him and he splashed back. They had never met before
but
the laughter and water made them feel like they were friends.
